Graduation Rate

Lamar University graduation rate is below the national average.

34% of full-time students enrolled for the first time to Lamar University completed the education program and got a degree in 150 percent of the expected time of completion.

The graduation rate value includes only programs that were completed less than six years for four-year degrees or less than three years for two-year degrees.

Graduation rate is the percentage of institution’s new-entering, first-time, first-year undergraduate students who complete their program within 150% of the published time for the program. Graduation rate excludes a huge number of students. This index doesn’t take into consideration students of nontraditional enrollments - part-time students, students who enroll mid-year, and who transfer from one institution to another. So graduation rate alone can create a misleading picture. Completion rate in the form of total number of students receiving any types of awards/degrees creates a complete picture. Combining this data with graduation rate is a better way to compare educational institutions.

Student Reviews and Ratings for Lamar University

I was accepted into the online MA in Mental Health Counseling on the 10th and withdrew from the university today, the 14th. This university is a joke. During the admissions process I got conflicting information from different reps. I got a call one day saying that all my application components had been received and the the next time I was contacted it would be with a decision. 2 days later I get a voicemail saying that my departmental application, references, and essays had not been received. I immediately call to find out what is going on, but can't get to a rep. That same day I sent an email to the rep who left the voicemail, and to this day I have no reply to the email. I have emails from the university stating that my departmental submission was received. I call back again in a few days and ge a different rep (this is the 3rd or 4th I've dealt with). This rep tells me that the essays and reference info are not missing, just the actual reference form from my reference. The university calls me to the point of harassment trying to get my reference form; my reference is a professional and did not have the time to fill it out right away, it took her about a week and a half. I get a voicemail on the 9th stating that there is a "problem with my file". I call back, and cannot get to a rep to ask what the problem was about. To this day I have no idea what the problem was, if there even was one. One day later on the 10th, I get an acceptance email. On the 12th, I get an email from the university stating that my start date is Feb 26th. My application was for the April 9th start date, not Feb, 26th. I get a call from an advisor the same day, wanting to enroll me in classes ASAP. The rep informs me that Lamar changed my start date from April 9 to Feb 26 (without my knowledge or consent), and I will have to submit a status change form to change it back to April 9. During the call with the rep, I can barely hear her over all the reps in the background; this call sounded like it came from a call center. After nothing but problems from this joke of a university, I filled out the status change form to be withdrawn from this disaster of a school. If you're thinking about applying here, don't. I wasted MONTHS of my time writing those entrance essays, and wasted my mentor's time filling out the reference form. I thought that this was a good program, only to find out it's all smoke and mirrors. This was a disappointing waste of time and money. ZERO STARS. Don't make the same mistake I did, don't walk, RUN FAR AWAY.

A good school but needs an on campus character & housing deficiency. The city does not seem to support the only major college in town.

I never hated lamar university untill now. I am international graduate student. Study wise is all good but when it comes to customer service they are really bad. I had very bad experience with ISSO office. They don’t pick up any calls no emails reply eventhough i remind them like 6 times. In this 21st century i felt helpless i am living in different state now so the only wayi can communicate is phone and emails. They suck at it. I can totally understand sometimes people are busy so they don’t pick up calls or email back. But i reminded them like 6 times. Its a matter of courtesy if someone trying so hard to reach to you many times and you ignored them.I Had to tried so hard to get my immigration papers. They really need to change a staff who deals with all this immigration matter. I won’t recommend any international student to join lamar now onwards.

Lamar is a lame school socially. But i didn’t come to turn up i came to get my education. I will give them 2 stars for having a good education system.

Overall Rating:

My experience at Lamar was good overall. I started off in the education department and was annoyed at how inflexible they were in regards to scheduling and classes in the degree plan. I switched to the Family Studies department and received my BS. The family studies department was small, so professors had plenty of time to give support. I enjoyed my on campus and online classes. There seemed to be a large amount of local and international students. The school itself was kept safe by a police force, but the location of the school is not in a safe part of town. If you plan to move to the area, please be cautious of walking around alone. I felt prepared for my future after graduation and found my dream job within 4 months of graduation. I can't say enough about how great (most) of my professors were.
